A crazy transfer surprise happened – I will be leaving Port St. Lucie! I am so sad to go – this was the area that I loved the fastest. Oddly enough it also will be the area in the which I spend the least amount of time. I’ll get a new mailing address to you next week when I find out where I will be, but in the meantime, no more letters to the St. Lucie address please! 🙂
IT WAS A GREAT WEEK!
I am so sad to be leaving Sister Clegg – I think of all of my companions I have learned the most from her. I think that’s probably a good thing, though, because I guess it means I haven’t plateaued (which is the enemy)! But tomorrow I will find out where I will be going – off to new adventures (hopefully in Miami!!!)!
We had an AMAZING lesson yesterday with a beautiful little family we found Sunday night. Hector, the father, has been striving hard to keep his family together. He has many problems that he is trying to overcome, but they are slowly dragging he and his wife apart. He knew that God really sent us to him and he has begun to prepare for baptism in this upcoming month of August. His wife understands very little English and he understands very little Spanish, so it’s a bit of an odd relationship. We were able to teach their whole family (they have the three cutest little girls! almost as cute as emily, mollie, and I – lol jokes). The wife told me in Spanish that she has tried every option to make their marriage work and is almost down to the end of the line. She said that she isn’t necessarily interested in being baptized herself, but that if it would help him she is all for it. We know that God really has prepared their hearts! I pray that the new missionary that comes here will take good care of them!
We also had a pretty amazing with Trisha, a single mom we met a while ago. We misunderstood a text that she had sent a while ago and thought that she wasn’t interested in meeting with us, but recently the Spirit prompted us to give her a call – thank goodness for His guidance! She truly is amazing and has been really humbled by her circumstances as well, but her love for God and her family are strong and she, too, is preparing for baptism.
While meeting with Adam (recent convert) this week, he started talking about how one day we’ll all be able to see each other in the Celestial Kingdom one day with all of “his Sisters in Christ” (that’s what he likes to call the missionaries). He said, “We’ll all be there together and we’re going to party like….like it’s 2016! It’ll be a HEAVENLY PARTY!” He is absolutely hilarious. During our lesson something we said reminded him of a Billy Joel song, and he started to sing it. We thought he was just going to sing a couple of lines, so we chuckled and kept talking about the scriptures, but he just kept on singing until he had sang the entire song! He really got into it. It was great! This morning he called me on the phone in tears because I was transferring. I really do love this branch! So many recent converts here are progressing towards the next ordinance so well. I’ll be glad to hear about them when they come to fruition.
While finding this week, we had some pretty funny responses:
1. *knock*knock* – door opens
Man on phone: “I’m on the phone”
Us: “Okay! We’ll we’re your missionaries and God sent us to share a prayer with you to help you come even closer to him!”
Man on phone: “Well, I’m on the phone with God right now and He just told me that I’m good! Bye!”
We burst into laughter before he could even close the door.
2. *knock*knock* – door opens
Us: “Hi! We’ll we’re your missionaries and God sent us to share a prayer with you to help you come even closer to him!”
Lady: “Oh, honey, all of these people always come to my door, but they don’t know that I have an ALARM! You can’t knock my door if I have AN ALARM! I don’t understand!”
Me: “Oh! We didn’t know that you had an alarm!
Lady: “Oh, I know, it’s because you’re YOUNG.
Me: “Well….okay! Can we give you a card?”
Lady: “Oh, they ALWAYS put things like that on my door, but they can’t do that – I have an ALARM!”
Needless to say, I think this woman may have been just a bit deceived by her security system salesman. I’m not sure if there’s an alarm that prevents people from knocking on the door…
It was a great week.
This morning I was reading in 2 Peter 1(4-13) and it was AMAZING. I love that in verse 4 it says that we are promised to be “partakers of divine nature” (see D&C 93:28) – we truly are children of our Heavenly Father and are promised that as we live as He asks, we will inherit all He has to offer and one day even become like He! But, this inheritance is conditional on our development of Christlike attributes mentioned in 5-7 (interesting that they are the same listed in D&C 4 as qualifications for the work – and that six of the nine attributes listed in Preach My Gospel ch.6 are specifically covered). What an awesome promise it ends in though: “for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall” (10). And the scriptures are there to keep reminding us of it all over and over (12-13)! God is Good. A favorite line in PMG says, “You need to be a Christlike missionary, not just do missionary things”.
I LOVE YOU.

Miracle Martes!

We found James, a sweet man who ran back outside after we left to give us Coca Colas, this week! We said a powerful prayer with him, but weren’t too sure if we were going to go back to teach. Yet, the Spirit gave us a little nudge a couple of nights later and we stopped by to teach him the Restoration. Basically, the lesson was powerful and the truth of it rang through to him resulting in questions like: “Have you been touched? (meaning did we receive the priesthood through the laying on of hands) Because if you have, will you baptize me right now?”. Don’t worry, we didn’t do it. We aren’t apostate. While the understanding wasn’t perfect, he truly did feel the Spirit. After explaining the role of a prophet he told us, “Well, I think you two could be prophets! I don’t think God sent you to me, I know he did!”, resulting in a really fabulous lesson (though we are not prophets). Unfortunately, a couple of days later we received a phone call from him letting us know that he unexpectedly had to leave town for the next three weeks. Satan is still working hard but never getting us down!
Our lesson with James was all part of MIRACLE MARTES (that means Tuesday in Spanish for all my gringos out there). On that day we also had two really amazing lessons with Patti and Larry, really strong recent converts who are spiritually progressing like mad and are actively preparing to go to the temple! I have a rock solid testimony that the Book of Mormon truly does give us spiritual power. It is when we read from its pages daily that everything really does work together for our good and we grow exponentially. To top it all off, we used a bonus 15 minutes or so that we had to do some finding – with faith-filled fists we knocked on the first door and found Urline who just happened to be looking for a church! And then found ROSA who speaks SPANISH! Who also is looking for truth! The unfortunate thing about becoming a branch is that we no longer have Spanish translation. 😦 Sad day. All in all, it was a fabulous day! Many prayers were answered, much evidence was seen, and we were given even greater assurance which led to even greater ACTION this week.
I had an awesome exchange with a greenie in Royal Palm Beach during which we were blessed to find and teach a few people in Spanish! I was also blessed with 32 bug bites…. (still trying to find the silver lining on that one).
Last night we also had a couple of amazing lessons with Anne and Izzy, two of our new investigators! Anne is really open and has strong desires to read and learn from the Book of Mormon. She is so quirky and loves to talk about all sorts of interesting things she reads on the internet, but she has a strong desire to find truth and to get closer to our Father in Heaven. Izzy was basically a massive miracle delivered to our front door step and wrapped in shiny golden paper. Sisters Clegg and Montague had found him while I was exchanging in Sebastian and he had committed to church for that Sunday. We called and called to round him up for church, but he never answered so we moved on. Then, just this week we received a phone call from him telling us that his phone had been disconnected and that he wanted to come to church! We had a magnificent Restoration lesson with him. He has a lot of real intent and is preparing for his baptism in August. Woo!
I love this work. Sunday was an absolute spiritual feast at church and, even though we were sad that none of our investigators came despite having six committed to come, we were able to teach a great lesson in Gospel Principles to help our recent converts progress right along. Relief Society was all about the importance of heeding the words of the living prophet. Think about it! He asks us to do such simple things like Family Home Evening, daily scripture study, and temple worship and promises protection from danger. When Noah was the living prophet, all he told them to do was to get on a boat – take 20 simple steps and board! The instructions were simple, yet the consequences severe unto death. Similarly, today our instructions are so very simple and it is not incorrect to assume that the consequences will be equally drastic. We must follow his council if we want to withstand Satan’s flood.
While studying in Alma 31:31, a footnote led me to John 16:33! You’ll have to look up the scriptures for the awesome doctrinal flood, but what a perfect example of the Bible and the Book of Mormon supporting and clarifying one another! They truly are both the word of God and only add to the many truths that God has once again restored to the earth. I LOVE THE SCRIPTURES!
I love you too! Go share the happiness you feel because of the many blessings you have because of the Gospel of Jesus Christ! And keep going!

Happy Birthday America!

Larry fed us dinner this week!

Only the STRONG survive in Stuart 7.6.15

It’s true! Only the STRONG survive in Stuart!

Hola familia!

This week Larry decided that he wanted to feed us breakfast and dinner on the same day, even though after our last dinner with us he told us that he wasn’t going to do any more meals with missionaries. He was all excited to show me his old, out of tune, upright piano in the garage, and I was all excited to jam. We had fun singing and playing, even if the veil is progressively getting thicker and I can only really remember how to play one song (Bruno Mars para siempre). Lemon Ricotta pancakes + homemade chicken wings = good eats. See attached picture for expression of joy.
We had a huge miracle named Jay this week. He was a former investigator who actually was baptized last year, but never was confirmed a member nor did he receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. He therefore needs to be retaught and re-baptized. It’ll be an interesting process. Jay has been trying for years and years to get away from the street life, but he has fallen over and over again back into it. We think that now is his time though. He has top and bottom grills. He is covered in tattoos. He has fancy lines shaved into his head. And, my goodness, can he recognize the spirit. He is striving hard to be an example for his wayward children because he doesn’t want them to end up like him, and showed up to church despite some pretty heavy adversity thrown his way. He brought two of his daughters and his son, all wearing their Sunday best. Needless to say, it was a happy day after weeks of several committed to church and several no-shows. The ward was all over him (in a good way), and many members did an excellent job fellowshipping even when we didn’t ask! We were glowing.
This week was absolutely full to the brim with exchanges! Two in Ft. Pierce, one in Royal Palm, and a blitz in Sebastian, in addition to MLC and our other normal meetings – so many hours outside of our area! I love having the opportunity to work with other missionaries. While in Ft. Pierce with Sis. Matheson, we met Milo Carvia (sp?), GHOST HUNTRESS. Apparently she has a TV show! And is a horror writer. And psychic medium. We had a nice discussion with her about spiritual gifts and the Plan of Salvation. She told us that we had good spirits around us and that we attracted them. Thank goodness! During that exchange we also taught Gregor, a man Sis. Clegg and I had found just the other day. We knocked on his door and offered to share a message about Jesus Christ and that His Church and Gospel had been restored to the earth, to which he replied, “No thanks. You’re at the wrong place”. We gave him a card and testified, and then walked down his driveway completely unfazed (I’m pretty sure that I could get rejected for 24 hours straight and not even blink an eyelash (well, that’s not true, I would probably blink a lot in a 24-hour period, but I hope you get my point)). He went back inside his house, but a few seconds later ran out and called to us saying, “OKAY! I want to hear what you have to say!”, and shouted his phone number, address, and name across the street at us. Our return appointment happened during our exchange, but he ended up just trying to tell us that it was impossible for us to know their was a God if we’ve never seen Him or heard His voice. All in all, the lesson was pretty sad because he questioned everything we said, even when our words were backed up with scripture. He just seemed so lost spiritually and really had no peace because of the many questions and doubts that filled his mind. When we left, he asked us to pray that he would one day be able to understand our point of view and that his mind would change. The request really surprised us, but we know that he knows there is a God who answers prayers but that he is afraid to have faith.
This experience, along with many others this week, reminded me of the clarity and simplicity of gospel truths. Through the Restoration of Gospel of Jesus Christ, all doctrinal truths that Christ taught have once again been brought to the earth in their purest form. God is not a God of confusion or doubt. “That which of God is light; and he that receiveth light, and continueth in God, receiveth more light; and that light groweth brighter and brighter until the perfect day…and I say it that you may know the truth, that you may chase darkness from among you” (D&C 50:24-25). God does not want us to be confused or lost in darkness, but desires that we can chase the darkness from us. Christ also states that “the light of the body is the eye” and promises that “if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light” (Matthew 6:22). If our one focus is our Heavenly Father, we will be filled with light. We must dedicate our lives to Him and share this light with others.
I love you! Read your scriptures!
